"My passion for painting is rooted in my garden. I strive to translate my excitement about the experience of growth, light, and translucent colors from the earth to my canvas. Nature has always spoken to me whether it is the rushing of a waterfall or the burst of new green in the Spring. I am awed by the beauty around me and I love to share my vision through my paintings."

Zhou migrated to the U.S. in 1995.

Jie Wei's paintings take on much the look and feel of "The Old Masters," but his style is his own, mastering light and dark for a most dramatic result. His ability to paint the human figure, especially the very old and the very young is masterfully executed. Color plays a major role in his compositions. He portrays softness where needed as well as boldness of strokes.

Deborah Bays

Deborah Bays has been blessed with a life in the Arts. She was born in Nashville, Tennessee, in 1951 and spent her early years in the formal study of music, playing violin and viola. In college, her focus shifted to her first love, that of making visual art. She earned a Bachelor of Arts in Costume Design for the Theater at the University of Texas at Austin then went on to complete a Master of Arts in Scenography at Purdue University. She settled in Denver and for two and a half decades designed costumes and sets for Regional Repertory Theater, The Hong Kong Repertory Theater, The Colorado Shakespeare Festival, Harrah's, Off Broadway and Public Television.

After so many years of making art as a member of a team, she longed for a more personal expression. This led her to study drawing and painting with many fine artists and teachers at the Art Student's League of Denver. While she still has a passion for both theater and music, nothing has proved as profound a challenge or as rewarding as painting. Her favorite medium is pastel and her favorite subject is light revealing form and conversely, form revealing light.

Bay's work has been featured in Southwest Art, Colorado Expression and The Pastel Journal where she received The Pastel Journal Grand Prize Award in the 2004 Pastel 100. One of her paintings will also be included in a new book published by North Light Books, Pure Color: The Best of Pastel

AAI 2012 Artist September Vhay New Painting Available Now at Saks Galleries Cherry Creek

American Art Invitational

100 National Artists
Small Gems Exhibition

hosted by

Saks Galleries Cherry Creek
Denver, Colorado
November 9 - December 31, 2012

Jackson Hole artist September Vhay is an impressive talent in animal art. She has recently been chosen by Southwest Art to be in the '21 over 31 artists with careers to watch' and also won the Trustee's Purchase Award at the National Museum of Wildlife Art's Miniatures Exhibit. She has shown her work at prestigious national shows such as 'Birds in Art', the National Museum of Wildlife Art's Western Visions Exhibit, The American Academy of Equine Art, The Cowgirl Hall of Fame, and The American Watercolor Society. She has won numerous awards in the last five Ex Arte Equinus International Equine Art Competitions.

Her work is classic in subject matter and technique and at the same time modern in her composition and minimal approach. Backgrounds drop away so that her muted earthen palette can evoke the very essence of an animal. Her paintings are realistic in form and detail, yet they possess an impressionistic aura as well, a looseness that adds a sensitive dimension. Speaking about her work, Vhay says, "My challenge and subsequent reward is to reorder reality by distilling it to its essence. It is in this essence where the truth of subject lies. Beauty resides in this truth. It is a pleasure to seek out this essence and to share it with others." A largely self-taught artist, Vhay's formal training is in architecture. She received her Bachelor of Architecture degree from the University of Oregon in 1993. She subsequently moved to Jackson Hole, Wyoming, where she worked in architecture for ten years and painted in her spare time. Her understanding of structure, composition, and light so crucial in architecture give her paintings a sense of three-dimensional form.

From an early age, William Acheff had an interest in painting. Though he studied art in high school, he never dreamed of becoming a painter. It was not until several years later, while working as a barber in his California salon, that Acheff had the opportunity to meet the Italian artist, Roberto Lupetti. The Italian awakened Acheff's interest in art once again. He soon began an intense European-style apprenticeship with Lupetti, spending five days a week for six months studying with the Italian master. Acheff's lifelong interest became a passion.

In 1973, Acheff moved to Taos, New Mexico, to separate himself from the influences of his teacher. It was in Taos that Acheff found his niche. Acheff, who is of Alaskan Athabascan heritage, has a special affinity for the historical and cultural artifacts that he chooses to paint. The appealing forms and designs of the Indian pots and artifacts are intertwined with Acheff's preference for painting textures from nature. The vintage photographs that often appear in Acheff's compositions help the artist set a mood. Each article in relation to the others becomes integral to the composition as a whole. The results invite lasting contemplation.
