American Art Invitational 2012
Brown made his first foray into art when he bought a set of oil paints while in high school. Although he had not painted until then, two of his oils won best of show and first place, respectively, in a high school art contest. This early recognition sparked his interest in art and his desire to pursue a career as an artist. Brown also received encouragement from several established artists in the area. Shortly after graduating from high school, he was introduced to Mark Rohrig, who invited Brown to his one-man show in Aspen, Colorado. From this experience in the professional art world, Brown learned that it was possible to earn a living as a painter.

Gordon Brown received the 2012 American Art Invitational prestigious Collectors Choice Award for

hosted by

Oldest Fine Art Galleries in Colorado

William Acheff "Tunes" 8 x 6 Oil

In 1973, Acheff moved to Taos, New Mexico, to separate himself from the influences of his teacher. It was in Taos that Acheff found his niche. Acheff, who is of Alaskan Athabascan heritage, has a special affinity for the historical and cultural artifacts that he chooses to paint. The appealing forms and designs of the Indian pots and artifacts are intertwined with Acheff's preference for painting textures from nature. The vintage photographs that often appear in Acheff's compositions help the artist set a mood. Each article in relation to the others becomes integral to the composition as a whole. The results invite lasting contemplation.

Over 100 nationally known artists are presented at Saks Galleries Cherry Creek during the holidays.  The American Art Invitational is an annual event celebrating the finest art and benefitting in part the Colorado Children's Hospital.

The American Art Invitational 2012 presents painter Natalie Featherston, One of the country's most innovative and accomplished young artists, Natalie Featherston works exclusively in the centuries old realm of still life to create dazzling narrative and trompe l'oeil paintings that combine the virtuosity of a Dutch Master with the vision of a thoroughly modern mind. The Chicago Sun Times has described her paintings as "artful beyond just illusion and trickery; they are truly masterful still lifes made with both craft and wit."

"What inspires me most is the creative voice that still life gives. Unlike portraits or landscapes, still life doesn't simply exist around us. You have to actually build the stage for the painting and select the subjects, colors, and textures. The end result must arrive at something that draws the viewer into an invented realm that connects with their experiences in a meaningful way. I have always found still life painting to be quite a challenge for these very reasons, and although it may qualify me for the 'one-trick-pony' category, I can't imagine painting anything else."

Landscape Artist Michael Godfrey - Two New Works - American Art Invitational Exhibition Saks Galleries Denver

presents
Landscape Artist
Michael Godfrey "Gentle Cascade" 12 x 16 Oil
Michael Godfrey "Winter's Best" 12 x 12 Oil

About Michael Godfrey

Michael Godfrey is an award-winning landscape artist whose work hangs in many private and corporate collections. Born in Germany in 1958 and raised in North Carolina, he earned a BA in Fine Arts and began his painting career in oils and watercolors. He spends hours photographing and sketching, preparing for a well thought out painting.

Michael describes his style as a combination of George Inness' impressionism with the moods of an Albert Bierstadt painting. "I paint," he says "to help people notice the special moments that happen every day, especially the drama when light first splashes across a scene." From different perspectives and different times of day, he works to capture and interpret the varying moods of light.

"A landscape artist has to have knowledge of many disciplines (geology, chemistry, physics, architecture), to understand the world in which they are trying to create. An artist must observe with the idea that what is observed must be interpreted and distilled. For a landscape artist, it is just as important what is not included in a work as what is eventually laid down. I ask myself, what is the dominant truth—is it color, shape of land forms, or time of day. I try to understand what I am seeing, so that the final work will capture the visual emotion."

Timothy Chapman - Need A Little Serious Whimsey In Your Life Think Timothy Chapman

presents

Timothy Chapman "Gravity Cancelling Song in Hares" 6 x 10 Acrylic

Timothy Chapman "The Metaphysical Precursor to a Season's Growth" 12 x 6 Acrylic
After receiving his undergraduate degree in Biology from Occidental College near Los Angeles, Timothy Chapman went on to get a BFA from Arizona State University and then an MFA from Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville, both in printmaking. He later began painting seriously for want of a press. Acrylic is his current medium of choice.

"'Invented Natural History Illustration' is how I've been describing my paintings," says Chapman. "Visually, the work borrows from various western traditions of depicting animals and plants, particularly the copperplate engravings that illustrated Buffon's Natural History (begun in 1766), as well as Victorian animal portraiture and old scientific illustration. I have tried to present similarly earnest, but basically inaccurate, renderings of animals by using humor, irony and a surrealistic sensibility that is not available to the scientist. In this way I attempt to address the emotion/sensation of Wonder, the conflict between the Real and the Imaginary, and why we accept certain things as True."

Chapman has shown his work from Coolidge, Arizona (solo exhibition, Central Arizona College) to Florence, Italy (2001 Florence Biennale). Most recently he was honored to be chosen by the U.S. State Department to show paintings in the U.S. Embassy in Tunisia, and to have work become part of its permanent collection in Myanmar (Burma).

Beautiful Stainless Steel Sculptures by American Art Invitational Artist Babette Bloch

Sculptor

Bloch "Budvase" 18"H Stainless Steel Edition of 25

Bloch "Seahorses" 14"H Stainless Steel Edition of 9

Sculptor Babette Bloch is a pioneer in the use of laser-cut and water jet-cut stainless steel in creating works of art. Her sculptures explore form and the interplay between object and light, reflect their environments, and expand the ways in which stainless steel is used in contemporary art.

Bloch's works of art embrace her eclectic tastes, her pleasure in aesthetics, and her technical curiosity. Drawing on several traditions in American art, she creates works that touch on Modernist abstraction, the cut outs and collage found in Pop art, and the long-standing practice of story telling in art.

In cutting, shaping, burnishing, and grinding stainless steel, Bloch has developed the material's natural properties of brightness and reflectivity while making the dense metal seem nearly weightless and ethereal. Her distinctive approach is seen in public commissions in her silhouetted and larger-than-life-sized Reflecting History series, seen in Brookgreen Gardens, Murrells Inlet, SC, and Hudson Heritage Farm, Ganges, MI. The fully molded floral and wildlife sculptures from her Reflecting Nature series are on view in museum and private collections in the U.S. and in Europe.

Presented now through December 31, 2012.

Here is an excerpt of an interview with Wayne Salge in a recent Southwest Art Magazine article regarding the annual exhibition and his latest work.

Salge "Plough" Bronze Ed of 12
"....Among the show’s three-dimensional offerings are small sculptures by Colorado-based artist Wayne Salge. Salge’s distinctive elongated figures speak of gesture, movement, rhythm, and line, where the essence of the human or animal is pared down into engaging, abstracted form. WALK ON, for example, was inspired by the sight of increasing numbers of people out walking quickly for exercise. Salge, whose name is pronounced sol-ghee, often starts with a quick sketch but then works spontaneously, allowing the process to guide his hands as he creates and connects shapes. “It’s all about lines, following lines up the piece, and sharp angles allow me to do that,” he explains."

Wayne Salge has three new works in the American Art Invitational.

Now - December 31, 2012

Karen Lawrence "On the Way Upstairs" 10 x  8 Oil
Karen Lawrence "Place of Honor" 10 x 10 Oil

Karen Lawrence, ..."Over the years, I've gravitated toward a way of painting interiors that works well for me. Homes are referred to me from various sources as people become familiar with my style,"

I steer away from commissions, so that I have the freedom to paint what really excites me. Those paintings turn out the best.  The oils shown here I painted at my studio at Tula Art Center in Atlanta. I photograph in wonderful homes, catching the light.  Then I pour over the photos at the studio, deciding what to paint next...what excites me."

Karen Lawrence along with 99 other nationally known artists work can be enjoyed at Saks Galleries Cherry Creek.  All work available for sale, sculpture, oil, watercolor and pastel.

Southwest Art Magazine joins Saks Galleries Cherry Creek to sponsor the American Art Invitational, Small Gems Exhibition opening November 9, 2012.

Here is the recent article in Southwest Art Magazine by Gussie Fauntleroy.  Enjoy!

Scott Burdick, "Narrow Streets in Seville" 12 x 9 Oil
All the beauty and mastery of larger artworks is condensed into treasure-sized paintings and sculptures in Saks Galleries’ 5th annual American Art Invitational. This year’s exhibition, Small Gems, presents the best in contemporary realism by 100 artists, among them: Scott Burdick, Gordon Brown, Michael Godfrey, T.D. Kelsey, and Karen Vance. The show opens Nov. 9 with a reception from 5 to 8 p.m. “Artists increase our awareness of things around us, and this year’s show is so much fun, so diverse in subject matter and artistic style,” notes Karen Sluss of Saks Galleries, who directs the American Art Invitational.

Mary Qian, "Day Dreamer" 15 x 11 Oil
One compelling genre represented in the show is figurative painting, as exemplified by the work of award-winning painter Mary Qian (pronounced Chien). The 39-year-old Chinese-born artist, now living in Chicago, gained a sense of delicacy and graceful lines through studying Chinese painting and calligraphy before coming to the United States in the early 1990s. Yet she found her true inspiration in Western art. DAY DREAMER captures her favorite model in a mood of quiet contemplation, dressed in pure white. The young woman’s fair skin takes on the soft pink hues of the drapery on which she rests. “People intrigue me,” Qian reflects, “especially during the process of communication in silence.”

Among the show’s three-dimensional offerings are small sculptures by Colorado-based artist Wayne Salge. “It’s all about lines, following lines up the piece, and sharp angles allow me to do that,” he explains.

Wayne Salge "Walk On" 12.5" H, Bronze, Edition of 12
For painter C. Michael Dudash, the American West provides unrivaled opportunities for combining some of his favorite things: the beauty of natural landscapes, the pleasure and evocative possibilities of paint, and the chance to tell, or at least suggest, stories about the past. Based in Idaho, Dudash finds inspiration in places like the Black Hills of South Dakota, the setting for COOL WATERS. The painting depicts a river curving through a canyon where a Native warrior has stopped to let his horses drink. The foreground lies deep in shadow while bright sun illuminates the far canyon wall. The image reflects another of the artist’s interests: amplifying the contrast of cool and warm colors to intensify the sense of drama in a scene. “Being a painter is sort of like being a screenwriter, director, and actor all in one,” he says. “I’m having a lot of fun with that.”

C. Michael Dudash, "Cool Waters" 16 x 12 Oil
With two hundred works on view, Small Gems offers both drama and subtlety, from photo-realism to soft, impressionistic renderings of the landscape or figure, remarks gallery owner Catherine Saks. “We’re so excited about this show.”
